The Verceles family still process the slate very much as it was done back in the 40's, by hand; with hammers and chisels.  They do this to preserve the natural color, grain and shape of the rock.  The quarry is located on a 1400 acre parcel.  There are still millions of "stones" unturned.
Our Rich History

History of Mariposa Flagstone Company, Yosemite Slate Quarry.  The Quarry located in Mariposa, California in the heart of "gold country", has been in operation since the gold rush era.  The quarry is located in the original town of Agua Fria, which was originally the County seat of Mariposa County during the gold rush era.  The town had a population of about 2,000 people at that time.

Material from the quarry was used for many foundations throughout the Mariposa County area during the "Gold Rush Era".  The quarry opened up commercially in the late 1940's and has been in operation ever since.

Gold Rush Era - Craftsmen from all over the world came to California during the Gold Rush era.  Many of them had never seen slate quite like that of Yosemite Slate.  The color with gold colors running through it, immediately put it in high demand for durable, decorative uses.  Many of the successful miners covered their floors with the unique, beautiful slate.
